Why is Jio So Popular,Cheap And How Jio Works?
Reliance Jio is an LTE mobile operator in india.Reliance Jio is the only company in india that provides wireless 4G LTE service network (without 2G/3G-based services) with coverage across all 22 telecom circles in India.
The Launch
Jio was first beta-launched to Jio's partners and employees on 27 December 2015 on the eve of 83rd birth anniversary of late Dhirubhai Ambani, founder of Reliance Industries, and later services were commercially launched throughout the india on 5th September 2016.
Other competitors such as Airtel, Tata Docomo, idea etc were gearing up to tackle the load of 3G connections that was going to hit them whereas Mr. Ambani, in that very frame of time thought of owning the 4G spectrum at very low rates [at that time as no one showed any interest]. Most people were of the opinion that it will be too long before 4G services are even thought of in India.
Launch of Jio was a turning point for all the mobile network operators in india. On its initial launch Jio offered free 4G LTE network with free internet, free calls, free sms along with free access to all jio apps for a year. This was what the indians needed, other network operators used to charge very high ammounts for providing internet and other services that too on just 2G/4G network.Soon jio got popular in india due to its free services, people started surfing internet more than they used to surf before.
Jio Apps
In May 2016, Jio launched a bundle of multimedia apps on Google Play as part of its upcoming 4G services. While the apps were available to download for everyone, a user required a Jio SIM card to use them. A.Following is a list of the apps:
- MyJio - manage Jio account and digital services associated with it
- JioTV - live TV channel service
- JioCinema - online HD video library
- JioChat - instant messaging app
- JioMusic - JioMusic Helps In Listening The Music In Different Languages And To Save Offline
- Jio4GVoice (earlier, JioJoin) - VoLTE phone simulator
- JioMags - e-reader for magazines
- JioXpressNews - news and magazine aggregator
- JioSecurity - security app
- JioCloud - cloud-based backup tool
- JioMoney Wallet - online payments/wallet app
- JioSwitch - To transfer content Between Android To Android, Android To iOS, Android To JioPhone,iOS To JioPhone,iOS To iOS And JioPhone To JioPhone
- JioNet - connect to JioNet Wi-fi
Initially jio was unable to handle the load, people started complaining due to their bad service quality and extremely slow internet speed when more people actually started to use their service. At the beginning of the public launch, things were so bad that more than 90% of the calls that people try to make will fail and you will hear nothing but the “All lines are busy” message, over and over.Just like any other corporate companies Jio also pointed their finger towards other incumbent operators, blaming them for not providing enough Point of Interconnection (POI) and those incumbent operators also blamed Jio for not having strong infrastructure to handle the loads. This war was fought between the operators in terms of providing adequate POI for almost a month. In the middle of this we the users thought that now things will get better with Jio.
Collaborations
Later jio colaberated with the most viral location based game "Pokemon Go" and also collaborated with few other popular brands that made jio easier to reach maximum people in less time. The best thing of jio was that,it was available at the rural areas of the country where people never used internet due to the high rates of internet packs(250-300 INR per GB).The love for jio eventually increased in the country and people started feeling conncected with jio.jio gave birth to many new startups and employement in the country.
The real test for jio was to keep it customers connected even after revoking the free services. As jio offered free services for 1 year people used jio sim as a secondary sim but the company wanted people to use jio as there primary sim,so that they keep it using even after the free services are stopped.Due to long term of free services customers got used to jio and started using it as a primary sim.
Cheapest Rates
After a year of free services jio offered cheapest plans for the customers that other operators couldnt offer, the freebies soon started moving to paid services. The craze for jio grew so much that people started buying jio sims by paying extra money!
Jio became so popular so quickly in Indian market is just because the offers/plans they were claiming to provide were simply too good to be true from the current Indian telecom market perspective. Just by paying for a reasonable plan we could get unlimited local + STD calls, no roaming charges, low data rates and many more things. Really, to good to be true.
Moreover, in India telecom companies always worked hard to provide us a below average service while charging crazy for them just make more and more profit. Since the birth of 3G and 4G in India no telecom company had actually worked on making a pure IP-based digital network, instead they just used duct tape to make their networks somewhat upgradable while still relying on the ancient infrastructure. After Reliance Jio came, things started to move really fast in terms of using the cutting edge technologies for network infrastructure.
The Jio Phone
On 21 July 2017, Jio introduced its first affordable 4G feature phone, powered by KaiOS, named as JioPhone. The price announced for it was ₹0 with a security deposit of ₹1500 which could be withdrawn back by the user by returning the JioPhone at Jio stores only after three years. This phone was released for beta users on 15 August 2017 and pre-booking for regular users started on 24 August 2017.
The segment boosted by JioPhone and Reliance Jio’s aggressive Rs 49 a month recharge plan grew faster and attracted more customers.
In 2017, around 18-19 million 4G feature phones were shipped in India, which was around 10-12% of the overall feature phone shipments. JioPhone had captured a 97% of the 4G feature phone market in 2017.
Few Reasons,Why Jio Is The Cheapest Of All Mobile Networks
Jio is a startup which means it can take huge desicions in a short amount of time. That’s because it is not committed to anything. Unlike other telecom companies which are buried in old traditions and have been playing it safe ever since they gained users.
It only has 4G connectivity to maintain and setup whereas other companies have 2G, 3G and 4G infrastructure to worry about and maintain. 1G is obsolete, I think.
Jio is delaying it's profits for more customers: Its an understandable tactic for a company with a lot of money.
